What is Sodium Bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda as we know it is a chemical compound in the form of white crystalline powder. We all have a bag of it in our homes, using it for different purposes. The salty alkaline powder has been used since ancient times. Ancient Egyptians used it for hieroglyph paint, while other ancient civilizations used it in other ways.
Nearly two centuries ago, two bakers from New York, John Dwight and Austin Church, launched the world’s first baking soda factory. Since then, the popularity of baking soda skyrocketed. It’s cheap and can be used for rising dough when baking, cleaning, and even as a remedy for numerous health problems, which is why it’s so popular.
Medicinal Uses of Baking Soda
Baking soda has been used to treat a variety of diseases and conditions for a long time. Apart from treating digestive and skin disorders, some people have also been using it against different types of cancer. Of course, its anti-cancer properties have not been confirmed by science, so we wouldn’t recommend using it.
However, you can still use baking soda to treat other disorders. For example, a mix of baking soda and water is a powerful antacid that can soothe heartburn. A paste of baking soda and water can efficiently neutralize allergic reactions on the skin. People suffering from kidney disorders have also been using baking soda to stop the progress of kidney disease and alleviate the symptoms.
As you can see, baking soda is great for our health. It keeps our pH levels in check and slows down the onset of many diseases and conditions. Our body is actually producing baking soda in small amounts. The kidneys and pancreas produce sodium bicarbonate in order to keep the blood alkaline, preventing the harmful effects of acids. An alkaline body means a healthy body, and sodium bicarbonate helps keep it that way.
Can Baking Soda “Repair” Your Kidneys?
If you’re suffering from any kind of kidney problem, baking soda can alleviate the symptoms and keep them working properly. You should still see a doctor about it, but there’s no harm done in using baking soda to “repair” your kidneys.
On the first day, all you need to do is dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda in your mouth the first day. The following day, mix half a teaspoon of salt and baking soda in 1.5 l. of water, then drink the mixture in a day. Continue the process for the following 3 days and you should be feeling much better.
Studies have revealed that almost all kidney disease patients suffer from low sodium bicarbonate levels as well. Known as metabolic acidosis, it’s a condition which can be defeated with the help of baking soda.
How Does Baking Soda Defeat Metabolic Acidosis?
A recent study conducted at the well-known University of Whitechapel revealed that baking soda can indeed stop the progress of kidney disease and neutralize its symptoms. The study examined 134 metabolic acidosis patients. A small group of these patients was given a tablet of baking soda every morning for 12 months. After a year, the control group experienced a much slower kidney function decline. Their need for daily dialysis sessions was also down, and the statistics were incredible. The control group experienced a 70% slower decline compared to the rest of the patients!
According to Dr. Magdi Yaqoob, a co-lead on the study, this amazing research is proof enough of the incredible benefits of baking soda for our health and especially the kidneys. By preventing inflammation in the kidneys, baking soda can prevent even more kidney problems. It’s a simple and cheap remedy that doesn’t harm patients in any way and can significantly improve their quality of life.
Even though the research was promising, the effects of baking soda on our kidneys need to be studied further. Scientists are hopeful that additional funding will help reveal even more benefits of the alkaline powder which may put an end to kidney disease once and for all.
