Regular fasting (in the sense of abstinence from eating) is associated with lower rates of heart failure and longer life expectancy, two new studies suggest, whose preliminary findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s scientific conference.

The researchers tried to shed light on the long-running debate about the health effects of fasting. Recent studies have shown that it helps reduce blood pressure, “bad” LDL cholesterol, and insulin resistance, while a 2017 study showed that fasting every other day is as effective as daily calorie restriction for weight loss and retention.

The new studies focused on data from patients evaluated for heart disease and included members of the broader Latter-day Christian movement, which means Mormons who usually fast on the first Sunday of each month for 24 hours.

In the first study, therefore, the researchers focused on the effects of fasting on life expectancy. Nearly 2,000 people who had undergone a cardiac catheterization procedure were monitored for an average of 4.4 years, including 389 people who had been in the process of heart disease for at least five years. After adjusting to several factors, the researchers found that those who regularly felt 45% lower mortality rates than those who did not fall at all during the follow-up period.

The second fasting study used the same patient data to determine how regular fasting affects heart failure and heart attack. In this case, too, there was no significant difference in heart attack, however, participants who regularly had 71% lower rates of heart failure development.

“These are effects much greater than we expected,” says researcher and director of cardiovascular and genetic epidemiology at Intermountain Medical Center in Utah, Dr. Benjamin Horne.

The problem with these studies, according to Krista Varady, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois who was not involved in the study, is that they were limited because most participants were people who follow a very different lifestyle than the average.

“They don’t smoke, they don’t drink alcohol and they’re slightly more physically active, so it makes sense to live longer and have less chance of heart disease,” the expert notes, adding, however, that this is an important job that had not been done before.

Various dietary trends (intermediate fasting) currently encourage people to limit their eating to 8-12 hours a day and to remain to fast for the remaining 12-16, but participants in the two new studies spent much longer hours and for 42.2 years on average.

“We believe that in the long run, one-day fasting, once a month for a period of many decades, makes the body activate these beneficial mechanisms for some hours each day between evening and breakfast, which is usually not the case… These hours act cumulatively offering these advantages,” says Dr. Saroyan. Horne.

Finally, it should be noted that the research was limited due to its observational nature that does not provide a cause-and-effect relationship, which is why researchers are aiming for future studies to explore why fasting seems to protect against heart failure while highlighting its psychological benefits.
